Applying for the Ph.D. - Blog 6
YOU DID IT! Seriously, stop reading this and start dancing. No, I mean it! You deserve a minute to celebrate. The application process is nothing short than torturous. Its taxing physically, emotionally, financially... but you did it! Regardless of the outcome, that's something to be insanely proud of.
But I know what you're thinking: "Yeah Arcadia I get it, I submitted my applications but it really only matters if I get in somewhere."
So, here's the truth. This is the hardest part of the process.
At least it was for me. When I was working on applications (and even when I was interviewing) I felt like I had control of the process. The second I hit that submit button I gave up all of my control and had nothing to do but wait.
And everyday I would check my email every hour on the hour. I refreshed Gradcafe like my life depended on it. I tracked when interview invites were sent out the year before so I could know when I should expect updates. None of it made the process any easier, but it gave me the illusion of having some control still.
Truth is, you don't. But that's ok. You've done everything you could have. You worked hard throughout undergrad and/or post-bacc and you crafted the best application you could have. So take a minute and breathe (this is one of your last opportunities to actually have time to do that). Hang out with your friends, watch some movies, catch up on reading. Do anything you can to distract yourself from the anxiety of the waiting game.
If you're like me and control is a necessity in your life, you might spend time preparing for your interviews. Try some practice questions or find the perfect interview outfit.
Interviews will likely be taking place over Zoom this year so you can also take some time to prepare by making sure you have all the materials you need to succeed virtually!
