Must Have Make-Up Products for Cystic Acne
Hello my caffeine-addicted friends! Today's blog post is something that used to be extremely difficult for me to talk about... and that is my struggle with acne.
You see as a girl, especially a girl involved in pageantry, having any kind of blemish is like walking around with a giant scarlet letter. You're labeled as dirty, unkempt, and generally "not cool or pretty." Those of us who actually struggle with acne know that these labels are anything but true. For most, acne is nothing more than a reflection of your genetics and hormones. Some of us struggle with it and some of us don't. Just like some of us are born with blue eyes and thick hair and some of us aren't.
I first went to a dermatologist when I was thirteen, then again at sixteen, then again at 20. Each time my acne was worse and worse. I would get ridiculous breakouts then my skin would clear up, only to start the process again a few years later. By my junior year in college I had reached an all-time low. My face was covered in red splotches and bumps. I'd show you a picture, but I honestly couldn't bring myself to take them at the time. I avoided mirrors at all costs. In the words of my college roommate "it just looked painful." And believe me... it was.
My skin has since, thankfully, cleared, but breakouts still come and go. As my fellow ladies know, there is one specific time of month where my little cystic friends like to make an appearance. I've learned to accept these breakouts and not stress too much over them. (Stress only makes it worse, girlfriend!) I've also curated a makeup routine that helps me to feel beautiful even when my chin is covered in acne.
Ladies, your acne doesn't define you. Check out these products to feel incredible during all the seasons of your skin!
1. ELEMIS Superfood Cica Calm Hydration Juice
This gel moisturizer gives me LIFE. It's formula contains 75% aloe, which is known for boosting blood flow and killing off bacteria, and cica, which is rich in antioxidants and works to calm the skin. I've found that heavy, creamy moisturizers can clog my pores, so I love how cooling and soothing this light gel is. I use this every morning after washing my face as well as after the shower if I feel dried out.
This is a little on the pricey side FYI. Retails for $48.00 at Ulta.
2. REVLON Colorstay Full Cover Foundation
This matte foundation gives me the full coverage I need at the price I want. It lasts me the full day and is easy to blend. I typically don't mind a matte look in the winter, but for summer looks (of for those who prefer a more dewy look in general) check out the product below!
Retails for $13.99 at Ulta.
3. WANDER Glow Ahead Illuminating Face Oil
This is a lightweight, illuminating oil that can be worn alone or in combination with other makeup products. It contains skin-friendly ingredients like castor oil, black currant seed oil, and niacinamide. Personally, I only use this product in the summer when I go for a lighter, more dewy look. I mix a few drops into my foundation before applying to keep from getting too matte and cakey.
This is another budget-breaker at $42.00 from Sephora.
4. TARTE Shape Tape Concealer
Anyone who knows anything knows about shape tape. It's the gold standard of concealers. I feel like that's all I need to say about that.
Retails for $27.00 at Ulta.
5. MAYBELLEINE Super Stay Full Coverage Foundation
This powder foundation is a god-send for lazy mornings when you just don't feel like doing your makeup. It full coverage enough to wear all on it's own during light breakouts. I also do a light-dusting over my foundation when doing full makeup. This can lead to some caking though if you use too much over full foundation.
Retails for $11.99 at Ulta.
6. MAC Prep & Prime, Fix & Primer and Setting Spray
This one is a mouthful but it really is all-in-one. It's great to use to prime your face before makeup and also set your makeup when you're finished. It's that last boost of hydration your skin needs when finishing up your makeup. I personally order mine in Lilac, but they have 5 scents to choose from.
Retails for $28.00 from Ulta.
